What is Hilltop Lab?

Hilltop Lab is where the programs on this web site are tested. It is a Windows 2000 network with Active Directory in Native Mode. The lab was originally setup in a small house on the top of a hill in rural Wisconsin - hence the name. Except for the server, the machines are cast offs that no one else wants.

The lab clients are Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 Professional, and Windows XP. The Windows 95 and 98 clients have DSClient installed. The Windows NT machine has WSH and ADSI installed. I purposely keep the clients at a minimum configuration with as few upgrades as possible. This allows me to make sure the programs will work in most environments, without requiring software upgrades.

The network has one domain, several nested Organizational Units, many nested groups of all types, user objects scattered all over in Organizational Units and containers, and computer objects for each client. Group Policy is used for the Windows 2000 clients. Startup, Shutdown, Logon, and logoff scripts run from Group Policy. Logon scripts are also assigned on the "Profile" tab of user objects. The Startup, Shutdown, Logon, and Logoff scripts log information to a log file on the network.

Most of the logon script features were developed over the past few years. They have been used at Hilltop Lab and in a school network since the Fall of 2000. The programs to create, modify, and document users have also been used in both environments for over a year.

Hilltop Lab is affiliated with Hilltop Solutions, LLC. We have partnered in the development of a school lunch tracking program called PocketLunch (R). This program is ideal for small to medium sized schools. For more information, see:
